Choose a ready-made app when
- You need to be live in weeks, not months
- Your process is close to industry standard
- Budget is the main constraint right now
- You want to test a market before investing further
- You run a single location or a small team
Comparison
Every automotive business we talk to asks the same early question: should we brand one of your ready-made apps, or build something custom? Both are valid. The right answer depends on how unusual your workflows are, how fast you need to launch and how much you want to own.
A proven product you brand, configure and launch in days to a few weeks
Software designed from scratch around how your business works
Side by side
This guide compares the two honestly. AutoTech360 offers both, so we have no reason to push you towards either one.
| Criteria | Ready-made app | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | Days to a few weeks. The product exists; we add your brand, settings and content. | Typically 3 to 9 months depending on modules, integrations and platforms. |
| Upfront cost | Lowest. A one-off set-up fee and a licence, plus light customisation. | Higher. You pay for design, development, testing and migration of a platform built for you. |
| Fit to your workflows | Good for standard flows such as bookings, orders and payments. Deep changes are limited. | Exact. Screens, roles, approvals and reports follow your process, not the other way round. |
| Integrations | Common gateways, maps and messaging are built in. Unusual systems may need custom work. | Anything with an API: accounting, OEM feeds, telematics, ERP, marketplaces. |
| Ownership and IP | You own your brand, data and content. The core product remains ours. | You own the source code and the platform outright. |
| Competitive advantage | Same core features available to other businesses. | Features your competitors cannot buy off the shelf. |
| Scalability | Scales well for its intended use. Pivoting to a different business model is harder. | Architected for your growth plan, including new branches, countries or lines of business. |
| Risk | Low. The product is already live with other businesses. | Managed through discovery, prototypes and staged releases, but inherently higher. |
| Ongoing cost | Predictable licence or support fee with updates included. | Support and maintenance plan sized to your platform, plus any new features you commission. |
Our honest take
Most car wash, roadside, rental, taxi, parts and service businesses do best starting with a ready-made app and customising as they grow. Most dealer groups and fleets with more than a handful of locations need a full DMS or fleet system configured to their workflows, with custom work only where they genuinely differ. Many clients do both: launch a ready-made app for customers now, and add a DMS, CRM or fleet system behind it over time, with custom modules only where needed.
FAQ
Straight answers to what buyers ask us most. Can't find what you need?
Ask us directlyYes. We design our ready-made apps so your data, branding and integrations carry across. Many clients launch quickly with a product and commission custom modules once they know what they need.
Branding, content, pricing rules, payment methods, languages and many feature toggles are configurable. Deeper changes to workflows are possible as paid customisation, up to the point where a custom build becomes the better option.
You do. On final payment the source code and IP for the custom platform are transferred to you, and we can continue to support it under a maintenance plan.
For standard needs, the ready-made app almost always costs less. For businesses with complex operations, a custom platform usually pays back through efficiency and features that no licence can provide. We will model both for you during scoping.
